Howells “By the Waters of Babylon”

This is a wonderful and undeservedly obscure work of Herbert Howells on the text of Psalm 137. The unorthodox instrumentation has meant that concert halls often show the piece to better effect than churches. This recording is at Edythe Bates Old Recital Hall at the Shepherd School, Rice University.

Chris Besch, baritone
Sam Park, violin
Max Geissler, cello
Bryan Anderson, organ
